Me-go: Around-the-World

$21,625.45

Those of you who have been waiting, the new finances page is up. Until a few hours ago I thought my total was around $18,000 but after clarifying some discrepancies on my spread sheet the total has come to $21,625.45. Just to better solidify my OCD with all of you I’ve added more details, including pulling out shipping and airfare expenses. I know that when planning a RTW trip it can help to see just how much one might pay for a one-way ticket from Cairo to Addis Ababa. One way fares aren’t cheap!

Out of the 37 votes in my poll, the majority (by one vote) was closest, guessing $20,000. Now that I have the magic number I have also flushed out my Phase II Trip Statistics. You can find it here.

Before I left for Phase II, back in May 2006, my first poll was titled Which country are you most excited about?. Now that I’ve been to all of the countries in the poll I wonder if you still feel the same. Madagascar won with 64% of the vote—did it turn out to be the most exciting country I visited? You can see all of my poll results here, and vote for the most exciting on the poll at the right.

    Hey M,
It seems like a lot of money, but traveling is all about the experiences and you have plenty of those. I’m glad you took the time to do what you really love!

Wow! Very impressive–that’s way less than most people would spend in fourteen months at home! Can’t wait to take a look at all the details. Thanks for putting this up for those of us planning our own trips.

    Greetings

I am confused – are you reporting only the expense for Phase II – are the $10,000 +/- amount for Phase I treated separately? – it seems your out of pocket costs were higher based on the disclosure

I would do all this record keeping for myself but I know that tons of other travelers out there get something from it too. It’s amazing that so few people do this. I can’t think of anyone else, to be honest. I think that most people are scared to admit what they really spent or simply don’t know.

    Dennis,
You’re confusing me with your confusion and phrases like “based on the disclosure.” My sister is the accountant! $21,625.45 is for phase II, phase I was around $10,000. I refuse to total those numbers for my own sanity. I think it’s pretty clearly noted on my finance page, no? Did I confuse things further?

I think thats not bad for the amount of places you have visited!

It’s certainly less (and more fun) than living for 14 months in Chicago! I would have spent more than half of that on rent alone.

    Hi Megan,

I get a 404 when trying to access your Phase II Trip Statistics. 🙁

    Stu,
Some funky things are going on with my software. I really need to update to the newest version of WordPress, which is probably causing the problems. I was able to re-save it and it’s appearing fine for me now. Let me know if you’re still getting a 404.
