Lost Premiere Party

I try to keep this blog mainly focused on travel, but many of my readers have asked me for more frequent updates and expressed an interest in my life in Chicago now that I’m not on the road. I have kept one major aspect of my life a secret from you, my TV obsessions. I watch a lot of TV and it’s a little embarrassing to admit to all of you. I’ve come to realize that a lot of my readers think I’m a hardcore traveler who gets up at sunrise and enjoys hiking?the kind of person that doesn’t own a TV. It’s true, I am that on the road.

I will admit that I felt off when I was in Tajikistan and after a few days realized that it was season premiere week in America and I was missing it. My TV addiction actually manifested itself in physical form in Central Asia! I had to look up a few spoilers for some of my favorite shows in Dushanbe just to tide me over until I could download a some shows on iTunes in China. I don’t usually talk about it to non-American travelers on the road, I’ve learned it results in strange stares and disbelief from most Europeans. One night on safari in the Serengeti I was talking to the Austrian woman I was sharing a tent with while we were trying to get to sleep and she asked me what TV shows I watch. There was a pause while I mulled it over and decided to tell the truth. I don’t think she looked at me the same the rest of the trip.

Now that I’m back in Chicago with my own TV and my own place I can finally have like minded TV-watching friends over to share in my obsessions. Last night I hosted a Lost Premiere viewing party to celebrate the long-awaited beginning of season 5. Did anyone else watch the premiere? Do any of you, especially my non-American readers, hold TV-viewing parties?

Lost was so good! I had to miss my Lost party because I was sick!

In Chiang Mai at the moment and am currently downloading the season premiere from iTunes. My family is obsessed with the show and hope we can continue to download it as we travel through SEA.

Enjoy Season 5, and whatever you do: No Spoilers! 🙂

Love it!!! I spent a brief stint in Masan, ROK gigging as an ESL teacher. We used to watch weekly whilst dining and imbibing in too much red wine.

    You’re not alone 😉

Oh, and by the way…take advantage of lax copyright and piracy laws abroad. For example – watch lost on the road… http://www.watchtvsitcoms.com/lost.php

Megan, you are funny! At this moment i don?t have a TV addiction. Eventhough, the other day, I was IN miraflores Peru having dinner with a friend and a Madonna Concert came out on TV and I was fixated on it. I was staring googly eyed at the TV, and it kept me from listining to my friend who was trying to have a conversation with me.

Just bc you are one way on your travels it does not mean you are that way always. I?m usually a big outdoorsy person when traveling but once home, I take it easier, well, I guess bc there aren?t realy outdoorsy things to do in houston : (

Lets say we have dual personalities, on the road and off the road.

    Pura Vida.

Oh definitely. we get together every week to watch LOST (thank god it’s finally back!) and Survivor. it’s totally a full on addiction, heh. btw, nice one w/ the Dharma labels. my friend erica printed out a bunch of them as well for all sorts of stuff from this site: http://maxpictures.com/weblog/2007/04/10/lost-labels-for-your-dharma-initiative-needs/!

Lisa, you should have been taking better care of yourself in preparation for the premiere!

Craig, no spoilers, don’t worry. I’m not sure I could even tell you what happened other than Sawyer was shirtless most of the time. I need to re-watch.

How’s the download speed in Thailand? I was trying to download an episode of The Office form iTunes in China in 2006 and it took forever. Plus once I downloaded it I realized my iTunes was to old so I had to download the upgrade and then realized my processor was too slow and it wouldn’t play anyway! I ended up just listening to the sounds because the video wouldn’t come in, sad!

Chris, So are internet speed fast enough to watch? I was always amazed at people in Chinese internet cafe watching video, which looked great back in 2006. However, video from sites I wanted to go to was too slow (maybe because of filters?).

Claudia, I agree with you completely. It’s like I have dual personalities. I’m pretty adventurous on the road (go into the Congo, no problem!) but when I’m home I’m a total homebody.

Vlad, That is the best link ever! I was looking for a long time for something like that but ended up getting the images off of a Lost wiki. I wish my friends would come over for a weekly TV party but more and more of them don’t watch TV. I think 3 hours was too much for them so only the hard core came for the premiere.

You know, it does depend on the location…think about it in terms of downloading content through iTunes. If a purchase download is slow then it’s more likely than not that web-streaming will be impacted too.

I’m always apt to go for free content first though!

Re: download speed in chiang mai – it’s pretty good – took about 40 minutes to download 1 episode – much better than other countries (downloading episodes of Arrested Development took forever in Sydney of all places!)

But, hey, I’d spend a whole day to get each week’s episode. I’m that addicted.

BTW, my daughter agrees with you re: Sawyer. Personally, I’d recommend you both rethink and consider Desmond.

Oh, I’m not a big Sawyer fan really. I just thought it was funny that I was reading spoilers (if they could be called that) in mainstream media that he would be shirtless as much as possible this season. I definitely prefer Desmond, even without the amazing accent.

After traveling so much you think I wouldn’t be so influenced by accents but a Scottish one gets me every time?I blame my it on watching so much “Duck Tails” when I was a kid. Scrooge McDuck was my favorite. Actually, Faraday is probably more my cup of tea… if only he had a Scottish accent.

Ha ha, we had an almost identical lost party to yours by the pictures. We had Dharma Diet Coke and Chips and Salsa.

I’m not in the slightest bit addicted to this show!!!

Mina, cute site! I highly approve of your fianc?’s sweater vests?sweater vests are sort of my thing. Let me know if you have any questions about RTW travel when you’re planning. I get emails about everything from where to buy insurance to people asking how often I shower on the road.

… and I just don’t understand people who don’t watch Lost!

    Hi Megan,

I am sure we will have a lot of questions re: RTW travel. We’ll probably be posting them on our travelogue (solely related to the upcoming trip) … perhaps you can give us some feedback. I don’t know if you’ll like it as much as the old one – at this point there is 100% less sweater vest.
