Me-go: Around-the-World

Hello/Goodbye Addis

Written by:

I’ve arrived in Addis in one piece. The weather is beautiful and the air smells much nicer than Cairo. The flight was uneventful, half full and arrived early. Luckily in the parking lot I met two other travelers, both Americans living in Cairo, to share a cab to the city.

This morning they decided to tackle the South (Omo Valley) first, because the rainy season is starting and roads will become impassable. So in a whirlwind I ran around town cashing travelers checks to fund the expense of an 11-day 4×4 trip in US dollars and taking another chunk of local currency out of The Sheraton’s happily functioning ATM.

Hang in there, dear readers, for the next week and a half while I drive around national parks seeing zebras, walking around colorful markets and meeting the local tribes. I’m prepared for it to be a tourist zoo—money for photos etc.— but some of these tribes are incredibly interesting and I’m willing to go with it.

This whole decision has been a whirlwind and totally opposite my usual slow pace of travel. But I figure I have to take an opportunity when I see it.

I know you guys are always excited for the photos and there’s some really good ones of the tribes this time. It sours a bit that I had to pay for every photo but they’re capitalists down here.

Hopefully I can find a good connection somewhere because the connects so far in Addis have been too slow to upload.
