The new year has brought a continuation of 2008’s cold and snow here in Chicago. This is the first winter that I’ve lived in Chicago itself, relying completely on public transportation. The streets and sidewalks in my neighborhood are covered in a foot of snow and I’ve been using my REI membership often, stocking up on winter boots and other things to keep me warm. Tomorrow Chicago is predicted to have a negative 35 windchill (-37 Celsius). I swear this is much colder than I experienced at Everest Base camp in Tibet. At least the sun shines in Tibet!
I ran across this interesting ‘Backpacker’s Diary’ today which I would love to take for a test drive. Of course, it’s only a concept and not in production but I can see this digital book working for guidebooks for backpackers, flashpackers and everyone else on the road. My main issue with PDF guidebooks is the inability to make notes in the margins (I’m sure this will be solved soon enough) and the problem of charging the device. This concept shows the device folding out to form a solar panel?brilliant!

Woah. That diary is quite unique! I’m almost interested to give it a test run…
